Can you tell me a bit about how Hammerhead Foods got started?
Hammerhead Foods was really born out of persistence and a wish-list. Our team of foodies (one being a qualified chef) wanted to create dishes with great flavours, minimal prep time, no fillers, and there were a few cheeky wishes about getting their kids to cook them dinner. Low and behold, that’s exactly what they created! Their persistence actually drove them so far as to create their own custom smoker so they could get their ‘just right’ flavour in there.
What do you think made ‘Go Gourmet Thailand' stand out enough to be up for a Food Award?
We love it because it’s got all of those really great unique restaurant quality Thai flavours, but you can customise it by adding coconut milk, lots of fresh lemon, or any unusual creation that takes your fancy. Consumers have become really conscious about what they’re eating and drive a demand for quality, which is really in line with our company focus, and we think this played a large part in our selection. We're very thankful to be chosen as a finalist, considering the other delicious products that were entered.
Which is your personal favourite spice flavour (and why)?
This is a tough one because I use all of them pretty frequently. If I was forced to pick, it would be a tie between the Thai slow cooker base and the BBQ seasoning. The Thai brings me back to our family cook sessions where us kids would chop and combine anything and everything, throw it into coconut milk and spices, and hope for the best. Nowadays when my family comes over I use the Hammerhead Thai pack and pretend that I’ve refined my cooking practise (although I might regret letting that secret out…). I’m also a bit of a summer girl, so I love the BBQ because it brings me back to backyard barbies.
What’s your favourite dish to make using the spices?
I’ve fallen hard for this recipe for Thai-Style Peanut ‘Pulled’ Chicken. Although, I do have a frequent affair with our recipe for Zesty Lime & Ginger Fish Tacos.
What kind of feedback have you been getting about your spices?
We’re actually really humbled by the feedback we’ve had! People love our flavours and being able to do the ‘throw and go’ method of cooking. We also get lots of compliments on the look of the packaging and being able to see the pure product inside.
Do you have some ideas for using them as the weather warms up?
This is where the fish taco recipe would take the lead as my favourite dish – perfect for summer days. We recommend using our seasoning salts as meat and vege rubs on the BBQ and there are lots of ideas for this on our website.
Any exciting new flavours in the works?
Absolutely! It takes months to arrive at a finished product, so we always have new flavours in the works. At the moment our frontrunner in the development line is our Mexican flavour. Although if our chef asks, you didn’t hear that secret from me.
Where can people find your product?
We’re in boutique stores around New Zealand and you can order via our website. We only launched in April, so our retailers are a growing bunch and we post these online as they come onboard. We’d also love to offer the Dish readers a special $2.00 discount off their first website order – just enter the code THANKS2DISH in the checkout section.
