Breakbread

Breakbread is bringing together refugees, chefs and inspiring speakers to promote cross-cultural understanding, through the power of stories and food.

The intriguing new event Breakbread aims to stimulate "conversation, greater thought and acceptance" about issues affecting Auckland's community and beyond. They're bringing together refugees, chefs, and inspiring speakers for events which will see letters read and a short film shown before the audience breaks bread together.

At the first event on May 28, three influential speakers – journalist Mike McRoberts, MP Jacinda Ardern, one of the first refugees from Mon state to arrive in New Zealand, Koasorn Tun, and Kiwi/Cambodian refugee Linda Chhim – will each read a letter to their 11-year-old selves. A film about Auckland restaurant Orphans Kitchen learning about Mon culture will be shown, before a supper of traditional Mon Pickled Green Tea Salad is served by The Cult Project.
