Cheese Heroes – Kapiti Cheddar

Regarded as an everyday cheese, a cheddar of fine quality is anything but, with nuanced and typically nutty flavours. Kapiti's range of four cheddars demonstrate the variety of the style, and make the ultimate toasted sandwiches!

Originating in Somerset, England, cheddar has been made since the 12th century. It's a staple fridge item thanks to its versatility in a number of dishes, whether melted or simply grated or sliced.

Kapiti's award-winning range of cheddars each have distinguishing characteristics that make them stars in their own right. Kapiti Pakari Aged Cheddar is aged for 18 months and is full-bodied and mature, with a firm, dry texture and a sharp, tangy flavour. Gold award winner at this year's Champion Chesse Awards, Tuteremoana Cheddar is Pakari's older sibling, and is aged for 3-4 years, giving it a sharp, zesty bite and firm, crumbly body.

Kapiti's Portwine Cheddar uses specially selected aged cheddar that is soaked in port, ripening to full, rich, tangy flavour. Finally, their wax sealed Smoked Cheddar Cheese is surface smoked to provide hints of hickory and ash flavours, resulting in a robust natural cheese.

The whole range of Kapiti cheddars completely transform the humble toasted sandwich into a richly flavoured comfort food, perfect for tucking into at this time of year. Visit the Kapiti Store in Auckland to try one for yourself!
