If you love Waiheke Island, chances are that you've heard of Tantalus Estate.
It's hard not to be captivated by the Onetangi Valley vista – sprawling vineyard panoramas and wide-open spaces flooded with light, lead out to a courtyard dotted with clean and classic features and bountiful Côtes du Rhône-style grape varieties. What's perhaps a little lesser-known, is what's brewing beneath it all.
Sitting proudly on eight hectares of unspoiled land, owners Carrie Mendell and her partner Campbell decided to elevate the main hub of the estate up a storey shortly after purchasing the site in 2013, to utilise the sun and reaffirm the restaurant's indoor-outdoor flow.
Carrie and Campbell first set out to open a casual-cool craft beer brewery, a vision that has now finally come to fruition. In a bid to further extend their beverage offerings beyond the wine list, the team have opened Alibi – a craft beer bar and brewery – housed beneath the vineyard's main restaurant.
Here, brew-lovers will be delighted with the craft beer menu. This post-prohibition style speakeasy oozes old-school charm, while establishing a relaxed and laid-back vibe for the thirsty.
Inside the proudly New Zealand-made 'brewhaus', Alibi brewery produces an impressive variety of seasonal beers, making full use of the flavours, flora and fauna sourced on Estate grounds. The beer-ageing process is carried out in wine barrels, further intensifying the beers' flavour profiles.
Alibi Brewers Lounge is open for both public and private enjoyment. Consider this innovative space the perfect locale for your Christmas party or summer event.
