Keeping It Fresh

Keeping It Fresh

What if the temperature inside your fridge didn’t change, even when the door was open? This thinking is the foundation of Fisher & Paykel’s ActiveSmart™ technology.

Refrigeration may seem like a simple concept, but the way that food is stored, preserved and used is becoming a significant issue for our planet.

If you look at the big picture, the global statistics on food waste are sobering. A recent report compiled by the British Waste and Resources Action Programme estimated that a third of all the food produced in the world is never consumed. In New Zealand the average household wastes approximately 79 kilograms of food annually.

Fisher & Paykel’s New Zealand based design and engineering team have been hard at work to create refrigeration products that are flexible and intelligent enough to actively respond to these changes. This means providing a consistent optimum temperature so food lasts longer, retains more nutrients and ultimately, creates less waste.

Food care to the fore

Food waste is an extremely complex issue, but one way we can address it is in our own kitchens through improved refrigeration storage.

All fridges are subject to temperature fluctuations, often resulting in less than ideal conditions and prematurely spoiled food. Fluctuations can be caused by many factors, from the volume of food stored inside to how often the doors are opened.

“Everything about our fridges is driven by real-life observational studies and research to provide an understanding about how people will actually use them, and what they need from a fridge,” says Mark Haydon, chief designer, refrigeration and laundry at Fisher & Paykel.

“In addition, our food scientists carry out tests on optimum storage environments for food types including fruit and vegetables, they test all aspects of ice production and water dispensing and carry out taint testing on materials used inside our refrigerators.

“Our goal is to bring food care to the fore, deliver freshness, better nutrition and unspoiled tastes to the people using the fridge. That’s why we take our cues from the people who are using the appliances, not what we think should suit their lifestyles.”

A fridge for every New Zealand home

For true cooling flexibility, Fisher & Paykel offers a number of refrigeration formats beyond the more traditional fridge freezer models to best suit how often you entertain and eat out – from freestanding french and single doors to CoolDrawers and integrated models that blend seamlessly behind cabinetry.

Fresh food enthusiasts may prefer the flexibility of French or single door. Fridge Freezers with the freezer on the top, the bottom or side by side offer a more traditional look and feel. CoolDrawers are a great solution when space is limited, while the new Quad Door offers true storage flexibility. Both the CoolDrawer and the Quad Door feature Variable Temperature Zone technology, allowing users to take advantage of four separate food modes - each designed to provide optimal care for different food types.

From the smallest apartment to the largest family home, Fisher & Paykel provide a solution for all your cooling needs.
