Tomorrow's Brunch – &Sushi, Auckland
Stop by this small Newmarket spot to slurp a broth for breakfast or a pick up a fresh plate of beautifully presented sushi for lunch.
Waking up with frosty fingers has set us on a hunt for the best warming breakfasts, one of the tastiest being the Breakfast Ramen at Newmarket's &Sushi. With charshu pork, swiss mushrooms, bok choy, bean sprouts and seaweed topped off with a free-range egg, it's a brilliant way to start a crisp morning. &Sushi makes for a great stop any time of day though, a fact much of Newmarket's hungry lunch crowd has cottoned on to...
If it's lunch you're after, their sushi selection is incredibly fresh and is as bright to look at as it is to eat. Load up your plate from their selection of colourful rolls – the sushi menu is changed up often and the chefs aren't afraid to swap out the rice for other grains, such as quinoa. Or choose from their Yakisoba (fresh, stir-fried noodles with cabbage, mushrooms, carrot and capsicum) which comes with either chicken, bulgogo beef, tofu, prawns or eggplant. Another warming option is their Inari Fried Tofu – a delicious broth topped with a selection of bright, stir-fried vegetables.
There are also bowls of Donburi and Katsudon with your choice of meat, tofu or eggplant, along with Udon and Soba Salads with chicken, charred eggplant or fresh tofu, while agedashi tofu, edamame and kimchi are offered as sides. There's a focus on free-range ingredients, which are clearly pointed out on the menu, as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes.
It's a treat to find winter food that's comforting without being overly rich and heavy, so &Sushi's a winner in our books. And good news for those of us who don't count ourselves as early birds: due to popular demand they now serve their Breakfast Ramen all day long.
