Last Night's Dinner – Devon on the Wharf
From the owners of Deco Eatery, Bodrum Kitchen and Mozaik Cafes, comes a bright new all-day eatery on Devonport's shore.
Being right by sea, it makes sense that Devon on the Wharf's menu emphasises fresh seafood alongside classic brunch dishes as well as a selection of dishes that celebrate the Turkish heritage of its owners Alex Isik and Nigar Ivgen.
Along with offerings of Blueberry Pancakes with white chocolate and rosewater, French Toast and Eggs Benedict, you'll find a Fattoush Salad of crisp leaves, radish, Turkish pide crouton and pomegranate vinaigrette and Lahmajun with flatbread, topped with spicy beef mince, capsicum, and paprika. Visiting late one sunny afternoon, I ordered the Seafood Harissa: a tasty combination of prawns and scallops sautéed in an harissa sauce and served with Turkish Bread to soak up every last bit of flavour.
Burgers filled with crumbed oysters, lamb or halloumi have been crowd-pleasing lunch options, as have the Devon Fish and Chips which come with minted peas, tartare sauce and hand-cut fries.
From 3pm a selection of small and large plates are on the menu. Beef and Sujuk Koftes with Tzatziki, Falafel with Hummus and Oysters are among the smaller options while larger platters of vegetarian, meat or seafood platters are perfect to share in the late afternoon sun. The mains menu is divided into dishes "From the Sea" and "From the Land" followed by a selection of decadent desserts.
While the Fried Halloumi in Fig Syrup sounded beautiful, I went for their signature dessert of Smashed Meringue with mango and raspberry puree, vanilla crème fraiche and crème anglaise which was almost too beautiful to eat. Accompanied by a sweet Turkish Apple Tea, it made for an incredibly satisfying end to a beautiful meal.
Devon on the Wharf has a distinct summer-time feel to it thanks to a fresh fit-out of designers Pennant and Triumph and hundreds of diners have already enjoyed the relaxed feel of the light, plant-filled space. Devon on the Wharf also offers lunches and coffee to-go for commuters, making it a welcome addition for those on the run as well as people looking to while away a warm evening.
